There is now a Gopher server running on monospace-dreams (our plaintext experimental server)! Try to connect with gopher://varia.zone on port 70. There is not so much there yet, but it's exciting to see how it works.

On Unix-like operating systems (including AIX, BSD, Linux and macOS), tilde normally indicates the current user's home directory. For example, if the current user's home directory is /home/user, then the command cd ~ is equivalent to cd /home/user, cd $HOME, or cd. This convention derives from the Lear-Siegler ADM-3A terminal in common use during the 1970s, which happened to have the tilde symbol and the word "Home" (for moving the cursor to the upper left) on the same key. When prepended to a particular username, the tilde indicates that user's home directory (e.g., ~janedoe for the home directory of user janedoe, such as /home/janedoe).[

Another ascii based programming esolang language: Befunge, made in 1993 by Chris Pressey
From the esolang wiki: "Befunge is a two-dimensional esoteric programming language invented in 1993 by Chris Pressey with the goal of being as difficult to compile as possible. Code is laid out on a two-dimensional grid of instructions, and execution can proceed in any direction of that grid.

"The Poietic Generator is a social-network game designed by Olivier Auber[1] in 1986 and developed from 1987 under the label free art[2] thanks to many contributors.[3] The game takes place within a two-dimensional matrix in the tradition of board games and its principle is similar to both Conway's Game of Life and the surrealists' exquisite corpse.
However, it differs from these models in several respects. It is not an algorithm like Conway's, but human players who control in real time the graphic elements of a global matrix, based on one unit per person. Unlike the exquisite corpse,[4] in which there are always hidden parts, here all the players' actions are visible at all times by each of them. Unlike board games, there is no concept of winning or losing, the goal of the game is simply to collectively draw recognizable forms and to observe how we create them together. "The emerging definitions of minimal computing and its frameworks fascinate me, in part because they engage various histories of technology at the intersection of aesthetics and politics."

"The Minimal Computing Lab at the Centre for Textual Studies (CTS) at De Montfort University (Leicester, England) was created to help students of arts and humanities subjects to understand how computers work, with a special focus on how they can store and process writing."
"We need a genuinely simple approach to programming, and for that we need genuinely simple computers. The Minimal Computer Lab uses two kinds: the Altair 8800 and the Amstrad PCW. These machines have no hard drives, no built-in operating systems, and no Read-Only-Memory (ROM). When such a machine is switched on it has empty memory and a processor doing nothing. The first task is to get something into the machine’s memory (and thence the processor) to start a ‘boot’ procedure. "
"In the Lab we make much use of paper tape because it renders readily apparent the fact that digital text is (despite all preconceptions) stored on a physical medium: there is nothing virtual about it. In other modern media the zeroes and ones are very small (say microscopic pits on a metal surface) and/or stored in a form such as magnetism that our eyes cannot detect. With paper-tape, the zeroes and ones can be read directly off the tape by the naked eye, and one of the first tasks that students are given is to manually decode the binary ASCII of a strip of paper-tape containing a famous quotation."

Many people prefer to consume their audiovisual media at resolutions and data rates that are as high as possible (thus consuming as much energy as possible). This is, of course, an extremely unsustainable preference.
There are countless ways, most of them still undiscovered, to make low and moderate data complexities look good — sometimes good enough that increased resolution would no longer improve them. Even compression artifacts might look so pleasant that people would actually prefer to have them.
